Music Videos..
The King Blues - Headbutt

Image..
Monkey in the centre of the frame more than the singer which suggests that the monkey plays an important role in the song/video.
Monkey with the singer in the same frame frequently, connotes that they have a relationship in some way - turns out to be the idea that a girl is a "making a monkey" out of the lead singer.
The clothes in the scene connote the genre with the strange cartoon features on the main singers jumper, the skinny jeans and also the type of hats - the straw hat and the caps - suggest the genre is indie from the style of the band. Also the main singer has a nose ring which connotes his style as being indie, reflecting the genre of the song.
The camera shots are used to focus on the singers and the monkey - close ups and medium shots to see the singers facial expressions. Also some focus goes on the instruments like the drums which gives clue to the genre.
The music is mainly diegetic apart from the odd shots where it is the band talking or laughing
connoting that they all get on well and are close gives a warm and friendly feeling to the genre unlike rock or grime.

Editing..
The editing is quite jumpy with not much continuity connoting quirkiness which is what we would like our video to be like. Straight cuts are used to create realism.

Target audience..
Teenagers that have a feel for an indie style of rap. Clearly not aimed at adults due to the style and tone of the song.

Genre..
Indie punk. Communicated by costume and laid back, light hearted tone.

Mode of address..
Direct address, singing to the camera/audience.

Narrative..
No narrative; based on the singing, the band and the monkey. The video does not display the story of the lyrics.

Post-modernism..

Representation..
The song its self suggests that girls are powerful and strong, contradicting the dominant ideology of women.

The Kooks - Naive

Image..
Lead singer has long scraggy hair which connotes the style of indie rock singers along with the dark clothing and leather jacket.
Close ups and mid shots of band and lead singer gives the audience a chance to recognise them and also feel as if they are being sang too. A low angle shot of the lead singer is used to maybe connote that we should look up to him because he is a good person and the girl featured isn't.
The colours are dark and so is the lighting, this also reflects the heaviness of the rock aspect of the genre and could also present the mood of the song - break ups.
The main male singer appears to in the centre of the frame connoting his importance. The girl is positioned on the side of frames to connote her as something which is not that important to him any more.
The sound is mostly diegetic but not where the video focuses on the story line rather than the singing.

Editing..
The editing is quite slow which reflects the pace of the song. Straight cuts are used to help the continuity flow better and show realism.
Target audience..
I think the target audience is a very wide appeal because of the neutral kind of style and sound.

Genre..
Indie pop/rock. Connoted mostly by costume and sound.

Mode of address..
Not as direct as The King Blues' video but that's because this has more of a narrative.

Narrative..
Shows the relationship when its good, then when it goes wrong but does not really follow todorov's theory.

Post-modernism..

Representation..
Reinforces teenagers to be out partying and getting drunk. Also represents teenage girls to be emotionally unstable and troubled.

Florence + The Machine - Dog Days Are Over

Image..
Costume and makeup could be considered as strange and unique, definitely not for the "chavs" and connotes the indie fashion.
Whole video is very white, connoting purity and angels which is reinforced by the heaven like theme throughout, this is interesting for the genre because the indie fashion does not really have any negative connotations with its people unlike hoodies and other groups of people.
The body language is shown through the slow and delicate dance moves which are not seductive in anyway which makes it different from r&b and dance videos.
Close ups are used, again to show identity but also long shots are used, these along with the full white backgrounds shows the space around them and creates a sense of eternity.
Lead singer is in the centre of the frame most of the way through to which shows her importance to the band.

Editing..
Not much continuity and the editing starts slow and gets quicker up to the corus which adds more depth to the song.

Target audience..
Target audience is clearly people who like the indie style and folk sounds and also people who like to be unique individuals.

Genre..
Indie Folk. Connoted by the unusualness and uniqueness reflected by costume, makeup and folk sound.

Mode of address..
Whole video is pretty direct and giving the audience the feel of being sang to.

Narrative..
This video has no narrative either but focuses more on producing a video that is different to others and attract certain people to watch it and there for promote the song.

Post-modernism..

Representation..
Suggests the ideology that women (lead singer) are angelic and innocent against males with the angelic theme and also suggests that being individuals is a good thing.

Oasis - Stop Crying Your Heart Out

Image..
firey personality. This is also shown 16 seconds in when the singer is shown chewing chewing gum in a way that could be considered arrogant, therefor the band or just the singer have connotations of being quite outspoken and have an attitude, this connotes the rock genre.
Center of the frame appears to be common use yet again in this video, connoting importance of people.

Editing..
A few blends are used from the singers to the narrative scenes and this connotes a relationship between the two and also creates a peaceful and cool tone not normally associated with rock but more with the indie side.
Each shot is a decent length so editing is not quick paced which would not flow with the feel of the song.

Target audience..
Any age, more towards the older teens however due to the nature and age of the band itself.

Genre..
Indie rock. Dark stylish clothes and focus on instruments.

Mode of address..
Some direct address along with non diegetic sound.

Narrative..
Along with shots of the band singing directly, there is a narrative cut into these shots. I like the use of cross cutting to portray the narrative between the actual band singing, i would like to use this idea when it comes to producing our idea.

Post-modernism..

Representation..
Representation of male rock singers to be arrogant and cocky, shown chewing gum in an obvious way as soon as the video starts.

The Wombats - Lets Dance To Joy Division

Image..
Hand held camera shots and point of view shots are very common in this video which produces a wobbly effect and adds to the jumpy energy of the song and the band. This also links to the quirkiness of the indie genre.
Long hair is again associated with the style of indie and also rock is associated with "head banging" which is also shown in this video and this also adds to the quick beat.
Framing varies as all people in the video are as important as each other.
Lighting has also been used to match the beat of the song and is very effective. This is something I would love to try out in our video because it is a very clever way to add an extra quirkiness to the feel of the video.
The colours in the video range from red and blue to black. The colourfulness and the jumpy dancing and editing creates a sense of happiness and which isn't unexpected from the indie genre.

Editing..
Straight cuts and short shots add to the quick paced editing to match the quick beats in the song and the jumpy nature of the band.
The effects of them flying gives a different edge to the band and also the use of the other special effects matches the tempo of the song.

Target audience..
Indie music followers due to style of video and music.

Genre..
Indie rock. Shown through long hair, focus on instruments and quirkiness.

Mode of address..
No direct address which makes it feel like the band does not know they are being filmed making it more natural and if they are just practicing.

Narrative..
No narrative, just focuses on the band and choir.

Post-modernism..

Representation..
The only real representation in this video is that indie boys are happy and like to have fun with their passion for music.

CD Covers..
Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

Cover.
The front cover is simple with just a street view and two people. It creates an enigma because the two people are not the band members there for makes the buyer wonder what relevance these people have. However, the people are positioned in the centre which connotes they have some importance. The colour is dull, boarding on grey scale which connotes the genre of indie rock because of the dark colours which aren't quite black and grey which is what would connote normal rock music. The tone this cover creates is quite a calm and relaxed feel which is associated with indie rock and also Oasis. "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" is an interesting title and does not make much sense to buyers however the "morning glory" part has connotations that the band are quite chilled and open as this aspect can be seen as unspoken, giving the band and genre a link to most teenagers because they talk openly about a lot of subjects. The band title is small but made to stand out on a black background but the main focus is the title. The font is basic for both the band name and title which connotes that the cover isn't that important and they are more passionate about the actual music and also their music can sell itself. The long shot used throughout the digipak makes the identity of the person hard to establish which looks like it was intended.

 Inside Cover.
There is only one man on this section of the digipak which suggests that as you open the CD case, time passes and the man he was walking past has gone and he is left alone again. This creates an image that this man is an individual connoting that this makes the band seem that way, individual. The city feel is still there and this still connotes that the city is important to the band and is where they are associated, along with the indie style which is mostly associated with cities also. The colours haven't changed but now there is no writing which is common for the inside cover of an album.

Inside Back Cover and Back Cover.
The front cover and the inside of the back cover have been repeated for the last to sections of the inlay. This could be to show that daily routine is repeated over time and a lot of the time you have to be an individual in between meeting new people. There is no text on the inside of the back cover which again is typical. The back has the aspects associated with the back of an album cover, such as; a bar code, the song titles and the length of these and the production company logo. The song titles on this album are more structured in columns and the writing is small so that the focus is not taken off the picture which varies between different albums. By doing this, it connotes that the band and genre like photography and indie people seem to like to capture images of the world and everything in it as they are seen to be quite deep people.

Florence and The Machine - Lungs
Cover.
This album cover makes more sense and creates less of an enigma due to the fact the picture is linked to the title "Lungs". The blossom, birds and her blouse type dress connotes the indie genre and also the indie fashion. The colours are still quite dull but lighter on the woman in the for ground which connotes her importance as well as her being in the centre of the frame. The woman is also the lead singer which helps people recognise the album because of the iconic singer for the group is featured on the font. The lungs in the image also stand out because they are red, even though they are rather dark they still stand out amongst the other neutral and green colours, which reinforces the album title. The tone appears to be quite calm again associated with the indie genre, however Florence and The Machine are classed as indie folk which is not really communicated in this image. The text is white which connotes innocence and again neither texts are big to take the attention off the image. Both fonts are different and the font used for the name of the band is girly, this along with the image of the woman creates an image of the band being targeted at girls more than boys. The fact the woman is looking away means the address not direct which gives a more subtle tone to the album. The medium shot enables the buyer to see who the image is of but doesn't just focus on her face.

Inside Front Cover.
This image used is clearly from one of the gigs that Florence and The Machine have done. The position of the lead singer, the fans trying to touch her and take photos and the bright light against the black background suggests that she is almost god-like and everyone wants to of had contact with her. This image is basically bigging up the band and the album with connotations of how wanted and important they are to their genre and the fans - a good sales technique.

Inside of Back Cover.
This image is pretty and has its own style, which reinforces the idea that indies like to have their own image and be unique. The colours are still dark but the pattern on the curtains which looks vintage and the floral design with birds also adds femininity, backing up the connotations that the band and the album are aimed more at women than men.

Back Cover.
The back cover links to the front by the use of images of lungs. However this image is more scientific than the image featured in the front which connotes that the genre is quite educated. This educated idea has connotations of the indie genre because a lot of indie people are wealthy and have had a good education. The simple black background makes the lung image looks like an xray and also makes the angelic writing stand out. The bar code, the song titles and the production company are all featured and the song titles are more in a list rather than properly structured.

The Killers - Sam's Town
 Front Cover.
This cover has a indie rock look straight away with its dark colours and almost scratchy image. The pageant girl has connotations that the genre/band see women as an object, which is usually associated with rock because the people are stereotypically sex and drug orientated but more than the indie rock genre. The goat creates an enigma but also connotes that the band are slightly country sounding. The name of the band blends in with the whole image because of the colours used and the dotty effect because it makes it less bold. Interestingly, the title of the album is in red which makes it stand out against the grey scale image. The font of the band name is almost like show lights which contrasts with the sophisticated calligraphy style writing for the album name and connotes that the album is maybe different to the others that The Killers have created. Although some of the text is considered girly, the dangerous red and the pageant girl connote that the album is aimed at males rather than females.

Inside Front Cover and Inside Back Cover.
Again both images are grey scale and they both feature the country style images of the goat and the desert countryside. Also no text like the other digipaks I have looked at. The close up of the goat focuses on the curled horn but the connotations of this are tricky.

Back Cover.
Picture of the band used on the back rather than the front which is different because the band is usually placed on the front to create identity. The song titles are small and at the beginning to enable the picture to be the most dominant and they are listed rather than structured. The bar code and production details are separated completely on this album which makes them stand out for buyers to see and doesn't cover any of the picture up. The costumes of the band are dark and the long hair, beards and sunglasses connote the indie rock genre. The long shot of the band mean the buyer can see all of them and there is still some space left around them and the back cover isn't too crowded.

Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You

 Front Cover.
Instantly this album cover shouts femininity; the baby pink background, the pink dress, the hat, the pink writing and the calm and relaxed position she is in all connote femininity and suggest that the album is aimed at girls and is a particularly feminine album with reference to boys from a girls point of you. Doesn't necessarily connote the indie pop genre, just a singer who is targeted at possibly teenage girls. The text is bold and produces a statement about the name of the artist which connotes that the artist has a slight attitude and a lot of confidence. Along with this comes the actual album name "It's Not Me, It's You" because the usual break up line is 'It's not you, its me" and this makes the artist seem quite cruel in the way she is with boys. The album name is rather small and under the name of the singer, but its girly font backs up the connotations of the album being aimed at girls. The tone seems quite calm because of the colours used but the massive jet black 'L' to emphasise the artist seems to be loud yet silent, and makes up for the indirect mode of address.

Back Cover.
Colour scheme is carried through to the back cover and the idea of the giant letters which happen to be a random order, slightly connoting the indie genre because of the random and uniqueness that indie people create. The song titles are structured which contradicts the random imagery and the rest of the features and neatly places.

Kate Nash - Made Of Bricks
 Front Cover
The image on this album cover is almost fairy tale like connoting that the target audience is females. The red dress she is wearing connotes she is dangerous and maybe the fairy tale image is not as innocent as it looks. The hand writing font connotes that she is quite childish in some respects and this could mean she is immature and fun which could be reflected in her music - indie pop. The tone feels happy and cheerful due to the bright colours which can also be related to indie pop. The house in the picture also relates to the title "Made Of Bricks" and connotes that the album is down to earth and would suit most people. The artist is looking back at the camera and is giving direct address to the buyer connoting she has confidence. The long shot of her makes her in proportion with the house and also adds some enigma as to what her facial expression is because you cant clearly see.

Back Cover.
The font is the same as the front cover so the immature, child like theme is carried through and the layout of the songs is unstructured, adding more fun to the album. No image is used so the focus is on the song titles, bar code and production details are still included.

Single and Album Advertisements..
Oasis - Single Advert
The image in the background is stylised and the image is upside down in terms of nature - the sky is where the ground should be and the ground is where the sky should be. This has connotations of quirkiness and the indie genre but it doesn't connote the rock genre. The writing is quite messy which again connotes quirkiness and also the white stands out against the background image. The style of the patterns around the title of the single and the band name is quite fairy tale like which creates an enigma because of the band being male. The name of the band and the single name is bigger than the release date which is positioned at the bottom, making it less important.

The Killers - Album Advertisement
The mosaic style of this image connotes creativity which could reflect the way the band look at there music. The cool tones of blues and purples connote a cool tone to the genre and album which suggests that is related to indie music. The style of the font is neat but quite plain which does not connote that the band is of the rock indie genre because the font could be a lot bolder and make more of a statement. Again, the album title and the name of the band is the part of the poster which is made to be the first thing people see with the other writing at the bottom.

 Ellie Goulding - Album Advertisement
Again the artist name and the album name is the biggest text and the reviews are smaller and situated at the bottom of the page. The picture of the artist is quite light and the gold bits connote that the album is happy. However, her facial expression is quite plain and dull and does not show any signs of her being happy which contradicts the colour theme. Also, the mode of address is indirect which connotes her as being quite shy and innocent.

Florence and The Machine - Album Advertisement
This poster uses the same image from the album itself which makes a definite link and makes me people recognise it straight away which is a positive. Also the image relates to the album title so it makes sense unlike a lot of album images. The date is quite small and positioned at the bottom away from the main image along with all the other text features other than the album title and the band name.

Oasis - Album Advertisement
The band name is made to stand out in a black box outlined with a white line and this connotes that the band stand out among any background, just like the title - also displayed the same on albums. The idea of a posh car being driven into a swimming pool connotes that who ever did it is a rebel which connotes the rock genre because they stereotypically do things which everyday people wouldn't. Because of this rebel-like behaviour being shown in the image there is no need for the dark colours to be used to connote the genre, therefor the overall colour is quite bright.
